I upgraded my systems from Fedora 7 and 8, to Fedora 9, and found that sound no longer worked, because of a new sound system. Advice on the web suggested uninstalling it, but that didn't help.
So I switched to Debian, and ALSA behaved again, and I could ogg123 and emacspeak happily once more.
