Current availability

Because of a problem in administration of research proposal submission, I am currently available for work (as of July 2007). I'm ideally looking for contracts of around a year, as I hope to return to academic research after that.

For choice, I'm looking for programming work in Lisp, Perl or C; I'm happy to consider other languages, even if learnt for the purpose, but I definitely don't want to work in Java. (Some day I might write my own notes about what's so bad about it; for now, see Paul Graham's notes or Jamie Zawinski's rant.)

You can read my CV as html, as dvi or as PDF. You can contact me by email. I will be reading my email several times a week, but not daily.

Recent work

I was most recently working on some Irish-language-related computing projects.

Before that, I was a postdoctoral research fellow on the project B4-step in the Computer Science and Information Systems Department at the University of Limerick in Ireland. This turned out to be largely project management and programming.

Career break

Between being a programmer and being a researcher, I worked briefly as an HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) driver.

Earlier work

Before that, I worked in commercial software development for over a decade after completing my PhD.

I have worked in computer programming since my gap year between school and university. Here is a list of my experience in computing.
